A Taste of Montgomeryshire: Local Produce at the Heart of a Rural Stay
Tucked away in the rolling green hills of Mid Wales, Plas Robin is surrounded by a community shaped not only by the landscape, but by the people who work the land and the values they share. With generations of farming knowledge, craftsmanship and care all around us, we are proud to be part of a rural community where quality, sustainability and tradition are not simply ideals, but a way of life.
The appeal of staying here goes far beyond the views or the charm of the countryside. It extends to the farmers, producers and local craftspeople whose work helps define Montgomeryshire.
For us, it is a privilege to share the place we call home. Through the producers we champion and the experiences we offer, we hope to help guests form a meaningful connection with Mid Wales during their stay.
Why Local Producers Matter
At a time when food can often feel disconnected from its source, the importance of local producers has never been greater. Small, family-run and independent businesses continue to work with a level of care that is difficult to replicate at scale. Their methods are shaped by years of family tradition and a deep respect for the land.
Their work also helps preserve skills that could otherwise be lost, from traditional curing and careful herd management to rotational grazing and farming methods refined over generations.
By working with these local businesses, we help support the character and life of rural communities, while helping protect the landscape we value for future generations. To support these producers is to experience Montgomeryshire beyond its scenery, through its people, produce and traditions.
Daisy Bank Dairy
Set on the hills above Llandyssil, Daisy Bank Dairy is a third generation family farm with a deep connection to land, heritage and sustainability. Named in tribute to founder Glen Lloyd’s grandmother, Daisy, the farm’s story began in the 1940s and continues today with a clear focus on regenerative farming.
The farm’s pastures are deliberately diverse, incorporating herbal and clover pastures to enrich the soil and support pollinators. Cattle are moved through fields in rotational patterns, allowing the land to recover naturally while significantly improving milk quality.
These methods benefit the environment while also producing milk with a fresh, naturally rich taste. Their products reflect both the animal’s welfare and the conservation of the land they graze on. It is a thoughtful way of farming where sustainability and quality go hand in hand.
Alongside the glass bottles of organic milk waiting in your fridge on arrival, Daisy Bank Dairy also produces flavoured milkshakes and local Trefaldwyn cheese. Available from selected local independent stores and directly from the farm shop, their products offer a true taste of quality Mid Wales farming, with full traceability.
The Prized Pig
In nearby Abermule, The Prized Pig brings another expression of local craft, this time through traditional butchery, bacon curing and catering. Established in 2021 by Matt and Bec, this family run butchery, baconry and catering business was built on a passion for quality and a commitment to local sourcing. Since then, the business has earned a reputation for traditional methods, high welfare produce and a clear commitment to quality.
Matt and Bec work closely with neighbouring farms, building strong relationships with local suppliers and producers. Regular visits to the farms they work with ensure that high standards of animal welfare are maintained and that every product meets their expectations. The meat is prepared using time-honoured methods such as dry curing and careful butchery, without unnecessary additives or shortcuts. From eco-friendly packaging to supporting neighbouring farming families, every decision reflects a clear set of values centred on quality, traceability, and care for the environment.
As a family business, there is also a strong personal element running through everything they do. Their passion for their craft, along with their connection to the local land and community, makes The Prized Pig a valued part of Montgomeryshire.
As one of the main contributors to our artisan hampers, The Prized Pig gives guests a real taste of local quality. You can also order fresh meat directly through them or visit their stall at Montgomery Market in Montgomery Town Hall every Thursday morning.
Montgomery Vineyard
While dairy and livestock farming reflect Montgomeryshire’s deep agricultural roots, Montgomery Vineyard shows another side of the county: quiet innovation. Perched high in the Montgomeryshire hills at around 900 feet above sea level, Montgomery Vineyard sits at the edge of what is possible in UK winemaking.
This award-winning vineyard has built its success by working with, rather than against, local conditions. Soil composition, temperature variation and exposure are all carefully managed to produce wines that are both distinctive and balanced. Its award-winning wines have helped place Montgomery Vineyard within the growing conversation around British winemaking.
What is perhaps most striking is the way Welsh winemaking integrates into the existing agricultural landscape. While the area is steeped in farming heritage, businesses like Montgomery Vineyard show how the land can be used in new and exciting ways.
Their work is shaped by the distinctive climate and character of the Montgomeryshire hills, allowing them to create wines that reflect both the place and the care behind their craft. It is a testament to the ambition and dedication that continues to emerge from rural Mid Wales.
As our go to supplier of wines for our Cheese and Wine hamper and special celebratory stays, Montgomery Vineyard brings a distinctive local flavour to the Plas Robin experience. Their wines can also be found in a selection of local shops.
Bringing Montgomeryshire to Our Guests
For guests at Plas Robin, these local producers are an important part of the experience we offer. Whether through artisan hampers inspired by nearby farms and kitchens, private dining that incorporates locally sourced ingredients, or recommendations grounded in real relationships rather than generic lists, we connect our guests with the very best of Montgomeryshire.
This allows guests to engage with the area in a more meaningful way, connecting them to the land, the people and the values that define Mid Wales.
A Rural Community to Be Proud Of
Montgomeryshire is more than a beautiful rural destination. It is a thriving community built on generations of farming knowledge and pride in the natural landscape. The businesses we work with reflect that care for the land, each bringing their own expertise, passion and dedication to what they do.
At Plas Robin, we are proud to champion these businesses and share their stories with those who stay with us. By introducing guests to the people, produce and traditions that shape this part of Wales, we hope to make every stay feel more personal, memorable and rooted in place.
