Montgomery

Our Royal Charter town of Montgomery is a very pretty little place with a small selection of independent shops and eateries. Enjoy the special country ambience of market day, where locals catch up, local produce is bought and coffee and cakes are enjoyed!

This delightful little market of local producers is held every Thursday in the Town Hall. Just a short drive from us, or a worthy walk of just under 2 miles, your efforts are not in vain, as the views are stunning with an endless choice of vantage points.

Overlooking the town is the majestic Montgomery Castle, easily accessible via a trail that begins behind the Town Hall at the top of the town.

A great relic from the 12th Century, Montgomery Castle is steeped in history and offers even more breathtaking views across the Shropshire countryside.

The legendary ‘Bunners’ Hardware shop is a treasure trove of delights and has changed very little in the last 100 years! Also, don’t miss the Old Bell Museum which contains a fascinating tour of Montgomery’s ancient and royal history.

Gregynog Hall Estate

If you are looking for a hidden gem that is both marvellous and historic, Gregynog Estate is a wonderful choice. A quite spectacular country estate which offers wonderful woodland walks through beautiful grounds. There is also a courtyard cafe and shop.

The Estate is now owned by the University of Wales but was built originally by the Davies family. This is a dog-friendly destination and just a short drive from us.

Dolerw Park

Our nearby town of Newtown has benefited from some really exciting new projects centred around the beautiful ‘Dolerw Park’ – which the River Severn runs through. The park now includes a wonderful children’s play park, with a model steam railway operating on certain summer days that offers children sit-on rides.

A great spot for a leisurely stroll, the park loop is only 1.3 miles and can easily be completed in around 30 minutes. Bike and canoe hire are also available.

Coed Y Dinas

For a spot of ‘retail therapy’, try a visit to ‘Coed y Dinas’, which is just a few miles away near Welshpool. Boasting a huge range of country wear, homewear, gifts, clothing plus an agricultural centre and garden Centre.

The Cafe/Restaurant is also highly rated and serves an excellent ‘Welsh Breakfast’ using local produce – a great choice for departure day to set you up for your journey!

Lakeside Golf Course

We are lucky to have an outstanding 9-hole golf course and excellent, recently extended driving range, literally on our doorstep, just 2 miles away. Lakeside Golf Course is a beautifully maintained course that is suitable for players of all ages and abilities.

Designed to take advantage of the natural landscape, sited alongside the River Severn, the course provides spectacular scenery throughout, with the addition of beautiful lakes and tactically placed bunkers, to create a truly wonderful golfing experience.

The newly installed Trackman driving range is hugely enjoyable for golfers of all levels and abilities and a great way to spend a family afternoon.

Lakeside’s clubhouse also hosts a popular restaurant that serves excellent coffee, light lunches and gourmet pub-style meals all day, from breakfast through until the evening.

Park Hall Farm

For a wonderful farm-led experience day, we can recommend Park Hall Farm. A fun, family day out, Park Hall Farm is open all year round (please check for seasonal times) and just a comfortable drive from Plas Robin.

Indoors, children can explore a variety of imaginative and sensory experiences, from the vibrant role-play village, sand and water play zones, and brick-building stations to the thrilling Demon Drop Slide and dedicated sensory area for children under 4.

Outdoors, families can meet the adorable rabbits in Burrow Land, visit the playful goats in their very own playground, and enjoy a variety of rides, including barrel train rides, tractor journeys, and mini tractor driving. All activities are included in your ticket price, for great value!

Powis Castle

An impressive medieval castle built in the 13th century, Powis Castle and Gardens are now operated by the National Trust. An easy place to spend a full day exploring, the castle and expansive gardens are open for visits and tours throughout the year.

Only 7 miles away from Plas Robin, you can also walk the surrounding park which is home to hundreds of deer and many peacocks.

Stokesay Castle

Stokesay Castle is one of England’s finest preserved fortified medieval manors. Built in the 13th century, a sizeable amount of the original architecture remains intact, including the unchanged Great Hall or marvel at the carved characters in the 17th-century gatehouse. You can also climb the fairy-tale-looking tower for panoramic views of the Shropshire Hills.

Stokesay offers a rare opportunity to be fully immersed in medieval life. Today, you can enjoy the stunning scenery from the gable windows, embark on a family treasure trail, or relax in the tearoom overlooking the picturesque Shropshire countryside.

Ludlow & Ludlow Castle

Around 26 miles from Plas Robin is the very beautiful, historic market town of Ludlow. A quaint town full of history, the excellent local market is held every Wednesday and Saturday in the town square and is attended by many local producers. Truly delightful and you’re sure to find some unique, artisan treasures.

In the heart of the town stands Ludlow Castle – on an imposing high point overlooking the River Teme. Built as a crucial strategic stronghold for control of the Welsh Borders in the Middle Ages, it later became the seat of the English government in Wales.

Now a part of Powis Estates, the castle is a partly ruined uninhabited medieval fortress and open to the public. The castle is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Llanfair Steam Railway

Don’t miss the opportunity to take a ride through our glorious Welsh countryside on this heritage, single-gauge steam railway that was first opened in 1903. A great 16-mile return journey, the Llanfair Steam Railway is extremely well-managed with many special events run throughout the year. Some of our favourites include visits from Paddington Bear, Fireman Sam, Peter Rabbit and Father Christmas!

Vale of Rheidol Railway

We also highly recommend the Rheidol Railway in Devil’s Bridge for a lovely authentic experience day. The Vale of Rheidol Railway re-creates the Edwardian spirit of adventure. Step aboard one of the restored steam trains for a stunning journey along the Rheidol Valley.

Since opening in 1902, millions have enjoyed the scenic trip through the ancient woodlands to Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous waterfalls, nestled in the astounding Cambrian Mountains.

Corris Craft Centre

Get creative at the Corris Craft Centre and Gallery. Located a 1-hour scenic drive away,
It has 9 individual craft workshops hosted by extremely talented local artists who create a selection of high-quality handcrafted products.

Next to Corris Craft Centre is King Arthur’s Labyrinth. An underground storytelling adventure, there is more than enough to have an activity-filled day trip out with the family.

Both venues are also dog-friendly (besides the underground sections of King Arthur’s Labyrinth).

Coastal Days Out

Fancy a trip to the seaside?

Aberdyfi

A gorgeous seaside fishing village in the south of Snowdonia, where the River Dyfi meets the sea. It has a sandy beach and sand dunes that stretch for miles and the majority of this is dog-friendly too.

Once a bustling port, Aberdyfi is now a popular spot for sailing and watersports. Enjoy crab fishing, boat trips, kayaking, kite-flying, and more, all with stunning views of Cardigan Bay.

One important note is that the sea at Aberdyfi has strong estuary currents – with swimmers warned to be cautious when in the water. Children should never be allowed in the water alone.

You will also find a superb seafood restaurant – ‘Seabreeze’, which normally requires a table reservation as it is extremely popular in high season.

New Quay

A beautiful, quaint, welsh seaside destination, New Quay is located on the Mid Wales coast in Cardigan Bay. The small town has a choice of three gold sand beaches in Harbour Beach, Dolau and Traeth Gwyn.

The beaches are much safer for swimming and the area is known as a great spot for dolphin spotting, boat excursions and fishing trips. (Oh….did we mention the amazing fish and chips from the Lime Crab by the harbour?).
